Abstract

The objectives of the Guide for Establishing a National Oceanographic Centre are: 1. To provide national authorities considering the creation of an NODC with the background for understanding what elements are generally involved in its establishment, development and operation. 2. To provide individuals in charge of establishing a data centre with a list of recommended logical steps that should be taken prior to its establishment; provide the basis for selecting the type of organization suitable for the purposes of the individual country, in terms of available funds, existing volumes of data and data exchange and requirements both for providing services and for participating in international and to establish some basis for long-range planning of the centre's future development and expansion.
