Since 1990, the ECOP group (Etudes Climatiques de l'Ocean Pacifique tropical, former SURTROPAC group), IRD/Noumea, has been operating temperature and salinity measurements on board merchant vessels using thermosalinographs. The group has considerably developed and improved installation procedures and automation of the system, i.e. automatic measurements, GPS positioning, real time data transmission through satellites. The present guide describes the implementation and use of such a system, and the various mechanical and electronic techniques that have been developed.
